Arrupe International Residence T
he Arrupe International Residence is on the campus of the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, Philippines. Since the Ateneo is now able to confer pontifical degrees for ecclesiastical studies, Jesuit scholastics from across East Asia now come for Juniorate, philosophy and/or theology studies.
Opened in July, 1990, AIR now has twenty-four residents (six priests, four brothers, fourteen scholastics), with room for a maximum of forty.
Starting as an experiment in Jesuit Internationalism, Arrupe House, as it is more commonly known, has proven to be a happy mix of cultures and nationalities (at last count ten). At the same time, Arrupe men maintain a careful balance that allows them to root themselves in their own respective cultures and traditions. The first rector of Arrupe was William McGarry, SJ (Micronesia), who celebrated his fiftieth year in the Society on August 15, 1995. The current rector is John Mace, SJ, of the Wisconsin Province.
