Donations from the Guam Community
The Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED) is truly blessed with the generosity and participation of the people of Guam in efforts geared towards lending support to the children enrolled in public schools. The kindness of these communities has greatly provided these children with the toys they never had or the school supplies they badly need to perform well in school.
Since 2005, these communities abroad have been sending donations of books, school supplies and clothes through the initiative of Atty. Rodney of Calvo & Clark LLP and Mrs. Dina Jacob—ACED’s Liaison Partners for International Programs from Guam. Atty. Rodney and Mrs. Dina Jacob have supported ACED’s efforts over the past four years. During this period, their colleagues, families and friends have sent six 20-feet container vans of children’s books and toys to ACED which have been distributed to among the poorest children from partner schools in Quezon City
On December 23, 2009, two 20-feet container trucks arrived in Ateneo, loaded with relief goods from Guam specifically for those public school children whose families were affected by Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana). The donation was again organized by Atty. Rodney Jacob, as well as Mr. Emilio Uy, Chair of the Filipino Community in Guam. The goods comprised of canned goods, clothes, blankets and medicines. The ACED staff and some volunteers took charge of preparing bags of goods, which were distributed to 3,130 children from 39 public schools in Quezon City, Parañaque and Marikina, in January 2010.
Moreover, January and May 2010 marked the arrival of additional donations of clothes, household items, books and school supplies. These were packed and distributed to poor students of Payatas A ES, Manuel L. Quezon ES, San Diego ES, LR Pascual ES and Maligaya ES.
Support from Guam is still on-going. In fact, efforts are being made for another donation drive which will be held from October 7 to November 7, 2010.
Indeed, the Ateneo community is very grateful for the support and generosity of those who willingly extend their hand to help. On behalf of the thousands of students and families that have been blessed by your kindness, the students who are in some way able to study better because of your kindness, Maraming salamat po!
