Initial Report
on the Use of the Guide for Helping Children Read

This is an initial report on the use of the Guide for Helping Children Read (Part I) developed by the Ateneo de Manila through the Ateneo Center for Educational Development and the Loyola Schools Office of Social Concern and Involvement in coordination with Miriam College Study Center.  This instructional material was developed to assist the Loyola Schools NSTP students in tutoring children in the partner schools and communities with poor reading skills.

This initial report covers two schools: Lupang Pangako ES and Payatas C ES.

The following tables show the reading profile of the students who took the DOLCH Test as a pre-test (start of the school year) and as a mid-test (end of first semester) in the two schools.

Lupang Pangako ES Pre-Test
(n=53)
Mid-Test
(n=127)
     Pre-primer 52.83% 23.62%
     Primer 16.98% 16.54%
     First Reader 16.98% 26.77%
     Second Reader 9.43% 29.92%
     Third Reader 3.77% 3.15%

Payatas C ES
Pre-Test
(n=52)
Mid-Test
(n=49)
     Pre-primer 32.69% 12.24%
     Primer 19.23% 30.61%
     First Reader 34.62% 24.49%
     Second Reader 9.62% 30.61%
     Third Reader 3.85% 2.04%

The students who took the pre-test were not necessarily the students who took the mid-test.  Of significance would be the data on the students who took the pre-test as well as the mid-test.  The data shows that:

1.
out of the 23 students of Lupang Pangako ES who took both the pre-test and the mid-test, the scores of 22 students increased with some students increasing their scores by as much as 84, 90 or 111 points;
2.
out of the 15 students of Payatas C ES who took both the pre-test and the mid-test, the scores of 13 students increased with some students increasing their scores by as much as 23, 29 and 52 points.

Analysis and Recommendations:

1.
Attendance is a big factor in the improvement of the students' reading skills.  ACED will discuss with the OSCI formators and the principals of the partner schools ways by which the attendance of the students in the NSTP Literacy Program can be improved.
2.
These initial results are quite promising.  ACED will explore other groups or schools that can be tapped to offer tutorial sessions to students of public schools using these materialsThe Ateneo High School Christian Service Program has already agreed to engage in this activity next school year.  The AHS CSP students will be assigned to the partner schools not covered by the LS NSTP program.

The Guide for Helping Children Read (Part II) was used by the LS NSTP students in the second semester but the post-test was not given.  ACED will continue to monitor the results.
