The programs are designed along the broad objectives of the liberal arts program to develop in the student habits of creative thought and critical reflection. They equip the students to work in various communication contexts - educational, pastoral or industrial; government, business or development; print, broadcast, or film.

The Department of Communication, as part of the Loyola Schools of the Ateneo de Manila University, participates in the apostolate of the Society of Jesus through its mission, namely: to form students in the field of communication, information and media to be magis, to excel in their faith, professional skills, and service to the Filipino, particularly the poor and the oppressed.

The circular offerings of the Department lead, in the undergraduate level, to the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) major in Communication, and in the graduate level, to the Master of Arts major in Communication and the Master of Arts major in Journalism. The programs aim to form creative, ethical, and competent practitioners, educators, and audiences of traditional and new media. It is envisioned that these professionals will help promote true human growth, faith and justice. In this mission, it trains students to use their God-given talents in the field of communication for "the service of faith and the promotion of justice."
