PhD in Economics
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ECONOMICS

Established in June 2002, the Ph.D. program provides an opportunity for interested and qualified individuals to complete the highest academic degree in Economics. The program takes advantage of competent faculty in the Department of Economics at Ateneo de Manila University, as well as the library, computing, and other educational facilities available on-campus. The required training and instruction for the Ph.D. reflects the Department of Economics’ goal of training Filipino economists in the analysis of economic phenomena, equipped with the necessary scientific rigor. Thus, students are required to follow a curriculum that emphasizes analytical and quantitative skills, which will take three to four years of full-time study to complete. Students ordinarily devote the first two years of studies on course work and preparation for the comprehensive examinations, and begin work on the dissertation in the third or fourth year of studies.

ACCELERATED PROGRAM: The program is for students who only have an A.B. or B.S. degree. Students are required to complete at least 72 units of course work, of which 36 are core subjects. The remaining 36 units are elective and cognate subjects, workshops, and dissertation research and writing. The student obtains the M.A. degree (no-thesis) in economics after completing at least 36 units of course work.

Any undergraduate major will be acceptable, provided the applicant has taken at least one semester each of calculus, statistics, intermediate microeconomics, and intermediate macroeconomics. The applicant must have an overall undergraduate average of 3.0 (out of a maximum of 4.0) or the equivalent grade.

REGULAR PROGRAM: The program is for students who already have the M.A. degree in Economics. Students in this program are required to complete at least 51 units of course work, of which 21 are required. The remaining 30 units are elective and cognate subjects, workshops, and dissertation research and writing. It is possible to count previous work on the M.A. thesis towards the Ph.D. thesis requirement.

An applicant must have completed the M.A. in Economics degree from Ateneo de Manila University or the equivalent degree from another university. Students who do not have sufficient background for doctoral level subjects may be required to enroll in M.A. level subjects in addition to the Ph.D. required subjects. Students transferring from doctoral programs in other universities may apply, subject to fulfillment of eligibility requirements. The program can credit a maximum of twelve units towards the requirements of the Ph.D.

The Department will try to maintain a student-to-faculty ratio of 1:2 or 1:1 to ensure the quality of instruction and student supervision. The Department of Economics accepts qualified applicants for the first semester (June) entry only. Prospective Ph.D. students will normally enroll as full-time students.
