Biomedical Devices and Bio-Information Systems
Medical information systems, medical devices, and telemedicine are undergoing a remarkable convergence. For the Philippines, the promise of this movement is that state-of-the art medical practice and even the skills of expert practitioners can be brought to remote sites.
The research in Biomedical devices and Bio-Information systems focuses on combining communications technology with low cost diagnostics. Telemedicine will require that test procedures such as ECG, urinalysis, and cancer monitoring be done remotely. Moreover, the patient's information may be held in personal medical databases that will enable the transportability of medical records.
To promote these goals, the research projects focus on applying electronics systems to medical devices, performing medical tests using networking devices like cell phones, performing medical treatment at a distance, and maintaining personal medical records of individuals.
The Department is committed to making Undergraduate Research an important part of the student based learning. The main thrusts of the research are: Pain management, GSM updatable medical databases, and networked biomedical devices and subsystems.
